...I cannot
rest from travel: I will drink
Life to the lees: all times I have enjoyed
Greatly, have suffered greatly, both with those
That loved me, and alone...
from Tennyson's
'Ulysses'
Travels
One
of the joys of middle age is that it allows more freedom
than earlier days. In the past few years I have
had some opportunity to travel abroad. In the
summer of '05 I joined my daughter after her UNK semester
abroad in the Czech Republic. Together we sampled
a bit of the Czech, flew to Greece and then sailed among
the islands. We spent a few remarkable days in
Turkey and toured the ruins of Ephesus walking the
ancient path of Paul.
In the
summer of '06, my husband and I traveled to
Ukraine to
meet up with his son. We flew into Kiev then down
through the country to Yalta and the Black Sea. We
saw the remnants of many cultures: traditional
Ukrainian, Soviet Union, the newly emerging Ukraine.
We found a people scarred by the horrors of World War
II, marked by the decades of Russian occupation, but
optimistic about a future build on rich agricultural
land, excellent seaports, and a population determined to
enter the modern world economy.
One
place we especially enjoy is Mazatlan,
Mexico. In 2002 we hosted
an exchange student from Mazatlan, Gabriella Elguezabal,
Gabby. We have been fortunate enough to be able to
visit her on two different occasions. We love
Mazatlan for its sun, its beach, its wonderful sea food
and welcoming and gracious people.
