WELCOME TO THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
 

English 9 - This course continues the process of mastering the fundamentals of written communication, enhancing critical thinking skills, and expanding knowledge of and appreciation for the various literary genres.

English 10 - This course places emphasis on resolving "common errors" and achieving structural variety in written communication, enhancing critical thinking skills, and building on the literary experience through an examination of contributions on a "world" scale.

English 11 - Through an examination of the evolution of American literature and through improvement of confidence and competence in essay development, structure, and style, students will enhance their communication skills, critical thinking skills, and knowledge of and appreciation for literature.

English 12 - Literary emphasis in this course is placed on types and styles of "popular" writing.  Emphasis on written communication is placed on developing and using basic research skills and "communicating in the work place."

English 12 (College) - Three hours of college credit through Northeast Community College may be earned each semester.  English Composition I is directed toward the writing of themes with emphasis on objective writing.  It includes review of English fundamentals and training in efficient, accurate reading and comprehension using the essay, short story, and poetry.

English Composition II emphasizes the technique of reading and explicating works of literature. It also includes examination of the research process and written design in both APA and MLA formats.

Mass Media - This course covers all facets of black and white photography from planning the print through its process of development.  Students will be involved in the journalistic processes of producing copy and pictures for the local newspaper, the school newspaper, and the OHS yearbook.

Speech 11 - This course covers basic preparation and organization of informative, persuasive, and entertaining speeches.  Students will also prepare and present interpretive pieces.
