FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCE

Family & Consumer Science I - This one-year course includes a comprehensive study in family relationships, clothing and textiles, food and nutrition, child development, housing and interior design and consumerism and resource management. Grades 9-12 may register for this class which is offered each year.

Advanced Foods Science and Nutrition - This one-semester class will discuss the basics of nutrition, consumer skills, food preparation, food science, global foods, food safety and wellness. The principles of nutrition and its relationship to health, selection and preparation of food, meal management, food economics, and ecology will be covered. Grade levels 10-12 may register for this class in 2008-2009.

Child Development and Parenting - This one-semester class is designed to encourage and challenge students to discuss parenting readiness, decisions and practices and the study of child development (physical, mental, emotional and social) and the impact of a child on family life. Pregnancy, prenatal care and childbirth will be discussed as well as current topics. The course will provide opportunities to work with children, such as designing a preschool, working in a daycare and teaching lower elementary students. Grades 10-12 may register for this class in 2008-2009.

Family Development - This one-semester class is designed to encourage students to follow those behaviors that strengthen individuals and families and to reject opposite behaviors. Units covered are: understanding ourselves and others, marriage and parenthood, and careers. Grades 10-12 may register for this class in 2008-2009.

Interior Design - This one-semester course will give practical information about planning, building, and decorating a home using the elements and principles of design. Using design software on the computer will be a part of this class. Grades 10-12 may register for this class in 2008-2009.
