This research-validated reading program will help your students (1) decode long words, (2) increase oral and silent reading fluency, and (3) improve text comprehension.

Research shows that poorly developed word recognition skills are the most pervasive and debilitating source of reading problems, yet most decoding instruction ends after second grade. Many students are thus incapable of reading the longer words they increasingly encounter. Until now, few programs have addressed this issue.

REWARDS stands apart from other programs because it:

  • Teaches a flexible strategy for decoding longer words
  • Requires minimal teacher training
  • Works in a variety of educational settings

In Lessons 1–12, students learn the preskills necessary to master multisyllabic decoding, such as pronouncing affixes and vowel combinations, blending syllables, and correcting mispronunciations. Lessons 13–20 focus on fast and accurate decoding to increase reading fluency.

The Teacher’s Guide includes a comprehensive overview of the program; 20 teacher-directed, scripted lessons; blackline masters for overhead transparencies; assessments; practice word lists; and two posters. All student materials are included in the consumable Student Book.
