Configuring Your Macintosh
to Use DHCP

Mac OS X

  1. First, check to see if you have a signal under the airport signal at the top right of the screen. You may have to pull down from that menu to select a wireless access point. You should then be connected to the internet.
If that doesn’t work do the following items below.
  2. Select System Preferences from the Apple Menu.
  3. Select the Network icon.
  4. Select Automatic from the Location menu.
  5. Click on Aironet-1, then on the TCP/IP Window and make sure that it is set on DHCP.
    1. There should be numbers in the IP that are similar to 10.8.8.12 (ending number will be different).
    2. The Subnet Mask should be 255.255.255.0 and the router 10.8.8.254.
    3. You should not be able to change any of these numbers but if they are not there or not similar to above you will need to ask for assistance.
  6. Click Apply Now.

Mac OS 8.x or 9.x

  1. From the Apple menu , select Control Panels , TCP/IP.

Important: If your laptop currently has an IP Address specified, write this number down. It is not stored on your laptop and will need to be re-entered once you return to your static IP address configuration.

  2. Change the Configure: option to Use DHCP Server. You do not need to provide the DHCP Client ID.
  3. Re-boot the computer if requested to do so.

Once the machine is configured to use the DHCP server, the information entered in the Subnet mask:, Router address:, Name server addr.: and domain fields will be ignored (but remembered).

When you wish to operate under a static IP address once again, change the Configure: field back to "Manually" and re-enter the previously set address.
