O’Neill Public Schools Language Arts First Grade

 

First Grade Purpose Statement: All first grade students will read a simple story.  They will use phonics to decode grade appropriate text.  They will write simple sentences using correct mechanics and grammar.  They will enunciate clearly when speaking aloud.  Students will listen to and follow directions.

 

LA-1-1 Students will read a simple story.  Students will use first      grade reading vocabulary and comprehension skills while reading a variety of materials on or above grade level. (1.1.4)

 

LA1-1-1 Use phonetic skills to build and increase reading and vocabulary. (1.1.1)

 

LA-1-1-2 Recognize and create rhyming words and word families. (1.1.2)

 

LA-1-1-3 Demonstrate on task behavior when reading silently and aloud.

 

LA-1-1-4 Recognize context clues to discover meaning. (1.1.1.)

 

LA-1-1-5 Respond orally by answering a variety of grade level comprehension questions (literal, inferential, and evaluative questions). (1.1.4)

 

LA-1-1-6 Distinguish between real and make believe. (1.1.4)

 

LA-1-1-7 Make predictions based on title, cover, text and illustrations. (1.1.4)

LA-1-1-8 Retell a story by sequencing 3 pictures (use terms beginning, middle, and end)

 

LA-1-2 Students will use phonics to decode and spell grade appropriate text. (1.1.1)

 

LA-1-2-1 Use Saxon Phonics series. (see attachment)

 

LA-1-3 Students will apply knowledge of the organization of print to their reading and writing. (1.1.3)

 

LA-1-3-1 Identify front cover, back cover, and title page of a book. (1.1.3)

 

LA-1-3-2 Follow words from left to right, top to bottom, on a printed page. (1.1.3)

 

LA-1-3-3 Identify what an author does and what an illustrator does. (1.1.3)

 

LA-1-4 Students will utilize 3 lined paper to write one simple sentence using correct mechanics, grammar and penmanship. (1.1.7)

 

LA-1-4-1 Use the 6 traits of writing (ideas, sentence fluency, organization, word choice, conventions, voice) in a grade appropriate manner. (see appendix)

 

LA-1-4-2 Using district adopted penmanship program, student will print upper and lower case letters using appropriate starting points, strokes and recognizable accuracy. (1.1.6)

 

LA-1-4-3 Print own full name correctly. (1.1.7)

 

LA-1-4-4 Write capital “I” when referring to self.

 

LA-1-4-5 Write one simple sentence on a teacher or student selected topic. (1.1.7)

 

LA-1-4-6 Perform the outcome. (1.1.7)

 

 

LA-1-5 Students will enunciate clearly when speaking aloud. (1.2.1)

 

LA-1-5-1 Use correct grade/age appropriate language when speaking.

 

LA-1-5-2 Students will speak in clear, complete, coherent sentences. (1.2.1)

 

LA-1-5-3 Describe ore explain information in their own words, using an appropriate voice level. (1.2.1)

 

LA-1-6 Students will listen to and follow simple directions. (1.3.1)
