O’Neill Public School Language Arts Second Grade

 

Second Grade Purpose Statement: All second grade students will use phonetic applications to read and comprehend grade appropriate text.  Students will develop cursive writing skills. They will write 3 simple sentences using proper mechanics and grammar.

 

LA-2-1 Students will use phonetic applications to read and spell grade appropriate text. (4.1.1)

 

LA-2-1-1 Use Saxon Phonics Program (see appendix)

 

LA-2-2 Students will demonstrate comprehension skills when reading a variety of grade level material. (4.1.2)

 

LA-2-2-1 Increase existing sight vocabulary. (Saxon Phonics, and district reading series)

 

LA-2-2-2 Follow one step written directions. (4.1.3)

 

LA-2-2-3 Identify main idea and main characters when reading a variety of grade level materials. (4.1.6)

 

LA-2-2-4 Identify a sequence of events using the words first, second and third. (4.1.7)

 

LA-2-2-5 Respond to literal and inferential questions on or above grade level.

 

LA-2-3 Students will develop cursive writing skills. (4.2.3)

 

LA-2-3-1 Write using correct manuscript letter formation on 3-lined paper. (4.2.3)

 

LA-2-3-2 Recognize and correctly form cursive upper and lowercase letters on 3-lined paper. (4.2.3)

 

LA-2-3-3 Practice joining of cursive letters on 3-lined paper. (4.2.3)

 

LA-2-4 Students will write 3 complete sentences on a given topic using proper capitalization and punctuation. (question and statement) (4.2.2)

 

LA-2-4-1 use the 6 traits of writing (ideas, sentence fluency, organization, word choice, conventions, voice) in a grade appropriate manner. (see appendix)

 

LA-2-4-2 Identify a complete sentence. (question and statement)

 

LA-2-4-3 Use capital letters at the beginning of sentences. (4.2.1)

 

LA-2-4-4 Use periods or question marks at the end of sentences. (4.2.1)
