O’Neill Public Schools Language Arts Fifth Grade

 

Fifth Grade Purpose Statement:  All fifth grade students will demonstrate an understanding of a relationship of ideas in grade level texts.  Student will use the 5-step process when writing sentences, paragraphs and stories apply8ing the relationship of ideas.  Students will access information using standard and electronic resources.

 

LA-5-1   Students will demonstrate an understanding of relationships of ideas in grade level text

 

LA-5-1-1   Identify cause and effect relationships.

 

LA-5-1-2   Make comparisons between characters and/or ideas.

 

LA-5-1-3   Make inferences.

 

LA-5-1-4   Draw conclusions.

 

LA-5-1-5   Use paraphrasing to show relationships of ideas.

 

LA-5-2   Students will develop their vocabulary in order to read a variety of 5th grade materials.

 

LA-5-2-1   Memorize and define weekly vocabulary words taken from a teacher and/or published list.

 

LA-5-2-2   Determine meaning of words based on context clues.

 

LA-5-2-3   Identify metaphors and similes using the terms metaphor and similes.

 

LA-5-2-4   Locate clue words to help identify generalizations.

 

LA-5-2-5   Identify meanings associated with root words to understand specialized vocabulary in reading.

 

LA-5-3   Students will use 5th grade level conventions when writing.

 

LA-5-3-1   Use compound subjects and/or compound predicates in sentences.

 

LA-5-3-2   Identify and use correct forms of be.

 

LA-5-3-3   Identify and use correct forms of have.

 

LA-5-3-4   Identify antecedents.

 

LA-5-3-5   Use comparative and superlative forms of adjectives.

 

LA-5-3-6   Identify and practice abbreviations of states, forms of address, and streets.

 

LA-5-3-7   Use appropriate punctuation when writing conversational speech.

 

LA-5-4   Students will utilize the writing process when composing various self-generated or teacher assigned pieces.

 

LA-5-4-1   Use the 6 traits of writing (idea, sentence fluency, organizations, word choice, voice, conventions) in grade appropriate manner.

 

LA-5-4-2   Apply the relationship of ideas when writing a descriptive paragraph.

 

LA-5-4-3   Apply the relationship of ideas when writing a persuasive paragraph.

 

LA-5-4-4   Incorporate specific story elements in their stories.

 

LA-5-4-5   Combine sentences using compound subjects and compound predicates.

 

LA-5-5   Students will access and use grade appropriate standard and electronic devices.

 

LA-5-5-1   Use standard and/or electronic dictionaries to determine word roots of grade level appropriate vocabulary.

 

LA-5-5-2   Use standard and/or electronic resources such as: dictionaries, encyclopedias, CD-ROMS to access and use information.
