Studies Outcomes and Components
5.1 Students will describe the developments of early civilizations on farming and compare/contrast the cultures of North American Indian cultures.
5.1.1 Identify the route taken by the first Americans and explain the reason for their migration to North America.
5.1.2 Explain how the first Americans lived and survived.
5.1.3 Locate various North American Indian tribes.
5.1.4 Identify characteristics of different North American Indian cultures including their homes, way of getting food, food, and customs/traditions.
5.2 Students will identify the major events and achievements of Spanish, English, French, and Dutch explorers to North America and explain the impact of exploration on North American cultures.
5.2.1 Explain why Europeans wanted to find a sea route to Asia and the Northwest Passage.
5.2.2 Locate and identify the voyages of European explorers. (Ericson, Dias, da Gama, Columbus, Vespucci, Balboa, Magellan)
5.2.3 Identify the achievements/accomplishments of European explorers to North America.
5.2.4 Explain how European exploration affected the lives of Native Americans in North America.
5.2.5 Anaylyze the reasons why European explorers came to North America (motivation, economic, power)
5.2.6 Describe characteristics of early European settlements in North America.
5.3 Students will explain the factors that led to the founding of the English colonies and compare and contrast the colonies including geographical features, political, religious, economic, and social differences.
5.3.1 Explain how and why different groups of colonists settled in North America.
5.3.2 List the major geographical features of the New England, middle, and Southern colonies.
5.3.3 Compare and contrast life in the English colonies including hardships faced by the colonists, political, religious, economic, and social differences.
5.3.4 Locate the 13 original colonies.
5.4 Students will explain the growth and change in the Untied States during the 1800’s and describe how new methods of transportation and inventions led to this growth.
5.4.1 Locate and describe major trails that led to expansion of the west. (Oregon, California, and Mormon)
5.4.2 Locate and describe the lands explored by Lewis and Clark (Louisiana Purchase)
5.4.3 Explain how the country’s growth affected the lives of Native Americans.
5.4.4 Identify and explain the impact of new forms of transportation and other inventions developed in the 1800s.
5.4.5 Identify the causes and results of the struggles with Mexico.
5.4.6 Explain the reasons why different groups of people (miners, farmers, and ranchers) moved west.
