Language Arts Sixth Grade
Sixth Grade Purpose Statement: All sixth grade students will develop critical thinking skills and utilize vocabulary to demonstrate their independent reading skills. Students will utilize a multiple paragraph format to present topic specific information using sixth grade grammar skills. Students will use oral presentation skills to present information. Students will access information using a variety of resources.

LA-6-1-1 Define and use vocabulary words in a variety of grade level texts.
LA-6-1-2 Explain literal and non-literal meanings of words and phrases, such as idioms and personifications.
LA-6-1-3 Apply word recognition strategies to acquire new vocabulary.
LA-6-1-4 Examine explicit and implicit main ideas, details, sequence of events, and cause/effect relationships in grade level materials.
LA-6-1-5 Make predictions and comparison when using sixth grade level materials.
LA-6-1-6 Make generalizations and draw conclusions when using sixth grade level materials.
LA-6-1-7 Generate summaries based on various sixth grade level reading materials.
LA-7-1-8 Utilize Accelerated Reader program at the students individual ZPD level.
LA-7-1-9 Apply skimming techniques to find specific information in sixth grade level texts.
LA-6-2 Students will use the 5-step writing process
to generate a teacher-assigned paper.
LA-6-2-1 Use the 6 traits of writing (ideas, sentence fluency, organizations, word choice, conventions, voice) in a grade appropriate manner.
LA-6-2-2 Apply common spelling rules to write frequently used words at grade level and above.
LA-6-2-3 Use the 5-stpe writing process to develop and expand paragraphs and transition sentences.
LA-6-2-4 Write legibly using cursive.

skills in their work.
LA-6-3-1 Identify grade level possessive, demonstrative, and personal pronouns.

LA-6-3-4 Identify and correct run-ons and fragments, using these terms.
LA-6-3-5 Identify and use interjections.
LA-6-3-6 Write compound sentences using coordinating conjunctions.
LA-6-3-7 Use collective nouns in sentences.
LA-6-3-8 Identify and use linking verbs in sentences.
LA-6-3-9 Identify past, present, and future tenses of all verbs.
LA-6-3-10 Identify prepositions and objects of prepositions.
LA-6-4 Students will apply publishing skills when
making an oral presentation, using at least one prop, and restate and discuss
information following the presentations based on teacher/audience questions.
