Writers Workshop

This group meets Friday afternoon at 2:45 at O'Neill High School. It is open to students in grades seven- twelve. The Workshop consists of a group of young people who share a love of the written word and a desire to express themselves through writing. It is a joyous group of writers who provide inspiration and encouragement to one another.

William Shakespeare wrote that the poet "in writing himself, writes his time."

High School Book Club

Book Club will be a voluntary organization of students interested in reading a variety of literature.  The group will be open to students in grades nine through twelve.  Junior high students will not be included because doing so could limit the scope and complexity of the literature to be selected.

The primary purpose of organization will be to encourage young people to read a number of selections of literature that are not a part of the regular curriculum at O’Neill High.  An additional goal will be to give readers the opportunity to discuss and share their insights to the literature with other readers who share their interests.

At its outset the organization will set a goal of reading at least one book a month.  The readers will meet at 7:00 am for 45-60 minutes on every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 5th Avenue Expresso.  As the group leader, Ms. Bauer will prepare for the sessions by providing reading lists, supplying reading materials, and providing three to five discussion topics regarding the selections.  Those discussion topics will be merely a stepping off point for the discussions.  It is the intention of the organization to be driven by the interests of the student readers; however, the group leader will encourage the student readers to make selections from a variety of genre to broaden their reading experiences.  It would be wise for the students to read from several time periods and cultures.

The readers will be responsible to determine the selection, to set up a reasonable reading schedule that will accommodate all members, and to participate in the group discussions.  Attendance will not be required at all sessions, but regular attendance will be necessary for the group to succeed.
