Youth Leadership Conference Held on October 8, 2003.

Nominated O’Neill Public freshman and sophomores traveled to Norfolk for the Youth Leadership Conference.  This opportunity was made possible from the school’s high ability learner grant funds.  The conference is a day-long program designed to enhance the leadership skills of ninth and tenth grade students. Youth had a choice of workshops and an opportunity to dialog State Senators.  Participating in the conference were 100 youth from: O’Neill, Allen, Boone Central, Linsday Holy Family, Homer, Columbus Lakeview, Leigh, Madison, Newcastle, Stanton and Stuart.

The session opened with a rap, Leadership Today, presented by the Youth Leadership Team.  The morning session included a look at Team Building with Vickie Greve, University of Nebraska District Youth Development Specialist and an introduction to Leadership presented by Kim Bearnes, University of Nebraska Extension Educator.  Projects from the previous year were highlighted.  Reports were given by representatives from O’Neill, Allen, Leigh, and Stuart.  Shana Parks was the representative from O’Neill to report on the Family Reading Night students facilitated last April.

Participants, working with their own school and a mentor from the Youth Leadership Team, had a chance to plan an activity for their community.  They may also apply for grant funds to support that activity.  Next participants attended an array of workshops.  The final session of the day was the opportunity to interact with some of the area State Senators.  They included:  Gene Tyson,  Doug Cunningham, and Arnie Stuthman.

Special thanks to Mike Flood, US92 and Jerry Conway, Wayne State College for presenting workshops.  Extension Educators participating in the program were: Myrna DuBois, LaDonna Werth, Amy Topp, Jane Armstrong and Sandy Preston.
