Explorations

Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it;

Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

            This school year I began teaching an “Explorations” class to junior high students.  During this quarter class, learners are given the opportunity to complete an independent study project of their choosing.  All projects are based on student interest.  In the short time I’ve been with these learners, it has been amazing to watch them discover their passions.

            Throughout the class we have had many discussions and learners are required to write in their journals.  Their insight is refreshing.  I’ve watched them explore who they are as young adults and learners as they uncover what matters to them as individuals.  This exploration or learning has helped them to connect with who they are in this life.  They are discovering knowledge along the journey instead of having their minds stuffed with it.

            On their journeys within, I’ve seen commitment by students like Daniel, who is learning animation on the computer thanks to many hours during class and at home.  Risk was taken by Jordan when he allowed his peers to hear a CD he made at home of himself playing the piano and singing.  Brendan and Jaxsen have visions of the future as they study architecture and design a middle school.  The spirit of creativity shines through Hayley as she writes and directs her first play.  I have witnessed a high level of curiosity in students like Brittany, who is learning to use the digital camera and Publisher to make a junior high newsletter.  Intense interest has been portrayed in Joseph, who is learning about mechanical engineering through construction with legos.  In Kristin, who wants to be a journalist, I see budding talent as she develops her children’s story.

            I feel it is important for all of us to have the opportunity to explore within and uncover what we love.  It is not the final product that matters most, but the journey along the way.  As Ursula K. LeGuin states, “It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters in the end.”

            As educators, parents, and administrators, we need to facilitate opportunities for students to find their own path and discover who they are as learners.  We also need to take time to walk down our own creative path.
