Tucker    Tom Birdseye 1990

by Rachel Price

“The hunters bow must become like a part of his body if he is to use it well. By making the bow, the hunter knows it as well as he knows his own hands. Each shaft has to be straight as i want it to fly, each fire hardened tip as sharp as a chipped stone, each feather as true as a birds wing.”

Eleven year old Tucker dreams of becoming a fearless indian warrior. He is living with his father in Idaho because his mother and father are divorced. Tucker has his own tribe including him and his best friend Joe Allen. Tucker and Joe Allen plan to shoot a buck at the end of the deer season. Livi, or Olivia, my favorite character, Tucker’s sister that he hasn’t seen in seven years, comes and wants to move in with Tucker and his father. Tucker and his father own turkeys. Tucker isn’t really that fond of Livi at first but once they get to know eachother more they start to like each other more.

Tucker is a great book that I would recommend to middle graders who like adventerous stories. Will Tucker learn the skills of a brave warrior and shoot his buck? Well you’ll just have to read to find out!
