Fifth Grade Newletter
MATH
by Kari
My favorite thing to do in Math is to practice problems on our wipe-off boards. In Math when we talked
about Geometry, we had many fun activities. My favorite part was our Geometry Portfolios. This is were
we gathered information about Geometry and put it into a portfolio in color and examples. We had alot of
notes which had to be perfect because our teacher Mrs. Morrow graded them. My favorite section was
Geometry, but I hate working backwards on story problems! Right now we’re in division, but coming up is
fractions, “Yuck!”, but maybe it will be O.K. Mrs. Morrow is always saying to show your work and check
your answers. I guess she’s helping us to get ready for junior high. That’s Math for the fifth grade!
READING
by Brad
In Reading we have been reading chapter books. The one we’re reading right now is Hatchet by Gary
Paulsen. We read in groups, on our own, and in class. Before Hatchet we read Benjamin Franklin. At the
beginning of the year we read in textbooks and we mainly worked on worksheets, but right now we use
study guides for our work. Sometimes we have quizzes in the morning. My favorite book so far is Hatchet.
Mrs. Morrow says we’re going to keep reading novel books and learn to use response journals.
ENGLISH
by Neil
This year in fifth grade English we’ve been learning how to find subjects, predicates, nouns, pronouns, verbs.
We’ve also practiced correct punctuation, main idea in paragraphs, and abbreviations. We’ve also done
some diagraming sentences, but I don’t like doing that. We have all different kinds of books for English. We
have English books, Writer’s Express books, sometimes we just use worksheets, and we also use wipe-off
boards. We’re going to be learning adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions. Mrs. Morrow says that the
English language is kind of messed up. sometimes, but it is important to know.
SCIENCE
by Shawn
This year in Science we’ve learned about atoms, mixtures, living things, and how plants reproduce. My
favorite thing about Science is the experiments. The reason I like experiments is because I like to learn.
When I grow up I want to be a scientist. I hope I become famous for finding something like a dinosaur.
READ-ALOUD
by Marc
After noon recess every day we get to relax and listen to Mrs. Morrow read all different kinds of books to
us.This is called Read Aloud. We have read a lot of books that follow our Social Studies book like Pedro’s
Journal, (Explorers) The Slave Dancer, (Slave Trade) The Witch of Blackbird Pond, (Puritan Witch Trials)
and My Brother Sam is Dead, (Revolutionary War). Bridge to Terabithia, Manic Magee, and Mick Harte
Was Here are books that Mrs. Morrow read to us for fun. My favorite book so far is Mick Harte Was Here.
That is what we do after noon recess.
SOCIAL STUDIES
by Katie
In fifth grade history, we are learning about the history of America. At the beginning of the book, we talked
about maps. As the year went on, we started studying about immigrants, the clues to our past, and how
historians work. We have covered the first North Americans, the Indians, or Native Americans. A little bit
further down the road, we talked about the European exploration and the early American settlers. We are
getting to my favorite part of the entire history of America, The Seven Years’ War (French and Indian War)
and the American Revolution. At the present moment, we are all making progress on memorizing the fifty
states and capitals. We will be putting together state projects this second semester. Mrs. Morrow told us
that we would try to reach the Civil War by the end of the school year. I have enjoyed the whole year in
history and am looking forward to the future of the U.S.A. Mrs. Morrow has gained my interest in the
wonderful country of America!
SPELLING
by Kacie
So far in fifth grade Spelling the hardest word is professional, I think. We have a Pre-Test on Monday, a
Practice test on Thursday, and on Friday we have a post test. We play games like Sparkle and Typewriter to
practice. Usually we have twenty words, but on reviews we have fifty words. Monday through Friday we
do our workbooks that are due Friday. Spelling is my favorite subject even though I can’t spell that well. I
enjoy spelling because the games are fun and they teach you something, and sometimes there are easy
words!!
S.Q.U.I.R.T.
by Michael
Every Tuesday and other times we have S.Q.U.I.R.T. time which stands for sustained quiet uninterrupted
individual reading time. We can read anywhere in the room.We can even read in Mrs. Morrow’s desk. We
have to read four books a quarter or four hundred
pages a month. On our wall we have Mr. Bookworm. Every book some one in our class reads, we put a
body part on. When we get back around the room we get a party. If we read four hundred pages a month
we get a free personal pan of pizza for Book-It. S.Q.U.I.R.T. time is the best time, I think.
D.O.V./D.O.L.
by Ross
Everyday after lunch first semester we learned how to correct sentences during D.O.L. D.O.L. stands for
Daily Oral Language. We kept all our sentences in a red journal. This gives us good proofreading practice.
Second semster we changed to D.O.V. which stands for Daily Oral Vocabulary. We learn a new word
everyday and every week we take a test over all the words. We learn vocabulary words and it`s worth it.
COMPUTERS
by Ashley K.
First semester we learned keyboarding in Mr. Slaba’s room. He gave us our own disk, which was called
“Paws Party!” After Chrismas vacation we didn’t go any more. Now Mrs. Morrow teaches us in the
computer room twice a week. We’ve been getting into MICROSOFT WORKS 4.0 to do word processing
on stories, quizzes, and lots of other things. We save everything on our own disk. We’ve also been doing
searches on the Internet, like looking up Gary Paulsen and other addresses. Later on we are going to
research our states. Mrs. Morrow has showed us her email. Before the end of the year, we hope to plan a
class web page. That’s what we have been doing in the really neat world of computers!
WRITING WORKSHOP
by Ashley W.
In Writing Workshop we have learned how to write stories, descriptions, business letters, and a little about
other letters. Now we are writing Revolution stories about made-up people in the Revolutionary War. Mrs.
Morrow has told us about beginning, middle, and ending sentences. Writing Workshop is my favorite
subject.
