Sally Ride
Portrayed by Courtney E.
February 2000

Hi! I’m Sally Ride. Did you know if I wouldn’t have gone into space, the people who sent me up wouldn’t let any women go either?   I had to work hard to get there though, here is my story.
I was born May 26, 1951, in Los Angeles California.  I started out going to Westlake Elementary, and High School, where I considered a professional tennis career, but backed out because my mother said I couldn’t make the ball go where I wanted it to go. I studied Shakespeare. I always acted as a tomboy and hung out with the neighborhood guys.  I graduated at in 1973 at Stanford University with degrees in Physics and English, then I earned a Phd in Astrophysics.  I was 1 out of 1000 women but 8000 people to be chosen for NASA, along with five other women.   I worked with NASA, where I applied to be an astronaut.  I got to fly up in a rocket called the Challenger 3 times, with seven other women.  My second flight was October, 1984.  I got to use a remote to launch a satellite and retrieve it and replace it in the shuttle’s cargo area.  My biggest accomplishment was that I was THE FIRST AMERICAN WOMAN IN SPACE.  I am now at a college teaching science.
