Jackie Robinson

February 2000

Hi I’m Jackie Robinson. I broke a rule that said blacks could not play sports.  I was born on January 31,1919 in Georgia and that’s where I grew up.  I went all through high school there, I got scholarships to go to college all over.  I went to UCLA. After a while I went to serve in the army for four years. Then after I got out I couched for black kids’ sports. After that I wanted to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers or teams.  I got turned down because there use to be sports only for blacks.  Only whites could play in the major leagues.  I didn’t care what people called me but I did stick up for my self.  In 1947 I got elected to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers.  I proved blacks and whites could work together to make a team.  Teams threatened not to play my team unless I sat out and didn’t play at all. When I went up to bat they threw balls at my head.  When I slid into base they kicked me or stepped on me.  When I played for the Brooklyn Dodgers I played the position of first base.  When I played black people thought I was great and paid good money to see me.

IN 1974 when baseball season was over I got the rookie of the year award. In 1965 when baseball season was over for me. I became a leader of black people who wanted to change laws against them. I was the group called the NAACP of black right group. I found the first black owned the first bank in New York City. I died Oct. 24, 1972. People still remember me when somebody where’s my jersey #42 to represent me.
