| Hear ye! Hear ye!
Announcing the O'Neill Elementary Fifth Grade Medieval Tournament! I
hereby proclaim that all are allowed to partake in fun and festivity,
sportsmanship and honor, and "Let the Games Begin!"
We started our Tournament by creating "Rose Petal Bread" in
our Kingdoms. By painting flowery designs on our bread like those
during the Middle Ages, we got in the spirit of the day.

Next we
introduced the three competing kingdoms. Here are the competitors:
 | 5A: Genuine Jesters |
 | 5B: Kingdom of the 21 Scholars |
 | 5C: Knights of Knowledge |

Great flags, mottos, and mascots from all!
We proceeded outside for the morning's individual challenges.
Each knight received stars on their "scroll" to show which
challenges they passed. When time was called, the scrolls were
collected and the Kingdom with the highest average of stars was in the
lead. (5A) Challenges were numerous and included the following:
|
Joust
Bocci balls
Horse races
Calligraphy
Jester Juggling
Javelin throw
Ballad creation
Herb identification
Abacus
Medieval Reading
Medieval Trivia
Medieval Music
Checkers |
 |
We
enjoyed our rose petal bread and our lunchtime feast (meal) and following
read-aloud commenced the tournament action with the group portion of the
tourney. Three full-kingdom challenges took place:
 |
Tug-of-War
(5C won 2, 5B won 1) |
 |
Capture
the flag (5C won 2, 5A won 1) |
 |
Catapult
Launching (5A won) |
Points
were tallied and winners proclaimed! Congratulations to the KNIGHTS OF
KNOWLEDGE: 2005 Medieval Tournament Champions. Congratulations
to all other hard-working and good sportsmanship-showing knights as
well. The day was a huge success. Before retiring to our
homelands for the evening, we shared some of our Ballad and musical
creations in finest "American Idol" style. We'll all be
dreaming of jousts and juggling for some time, but will never forget the
real lessons learned and friendships made this past week- our first week
of fifth grade!
