Mrs. Morrow and half the town of O'Neill is going to the Black Hills of South Dakota for Spring Break and I get to go with!! The five hour trip north and west took us first across the border into South Dakota, and then gradually to higher elevations and pretty scenery, past Rapid City and into Deadwood, South Dakota. This "Old West" town is known as the place where Wild Bill Hickok was killed as well as host to Kevin Costner's "Midnight Star" restaurant and memorabilia establishment. Do you remember the movie "Dances With Wolves?" Well, much of it took place and was filmed in this area! After an evening of swimming and socializing at a casino/motel, the whole crew "hit the slopes" and traveled about ten miles to the Ski Resort called "Terry Peak." During the two days that we skiied I got to see many of my fifth grade friends! Kailey and Alex were such quick learners for their first time ever! Heidi H. and Molly S. are definitely "Ski Pros!" and Rachel P. showed me some tricks, too after recovering from the flu on the first day. Mrs. Morrow's daughters were fun to watch ski as well, even though I tend to agree with Claire, that the best part is to "ride the ride" (ski lift!). On the way home Mrs. Morrow told me about other years when her family has stopped and visited Mt. Rushmore along the way. It is a great American monument of four presidents' heads carved into a South Dakota mountain by a sculptor named Gutzon Borglum. What a magnificent tribute to the United States! I was glad to see a new area of the United States. I was glad to get a break from school and do some traveling. But I am glad to be back in O'Neill, Nebraska, as well, as my time here is quickly dwindling! |
