Did you know that back when I lived we could not
fly other people around? I Wilbur was born April 16,1867 in Millville,
Indiana. My brother Orville was born August 19,1871in Daytona, Ohio.
When we were kids our Mom helped us
build a sled. Then put a rudder on it.
We bought bicycles in 1892 and opened a bicycle
shop in 1893. We began to repair friends’ bicycles. My brother
and I built a printing press and started our own printing firm.
We got interested in flying because we wanted
to make a kite that would take us to the sky. In 1900 Wilbur constructed
a plane 12 meters long, weighed 750 pounds with the pilot in it. In our
first flight we took our plane to Devil’s Hill in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
It was at 10:35 am, December 17, 1903. We built our own 4-cylinder,
12-horsepower engine.
We were the first humans to fly with a motor
plane. Sometimes we flew over 2 hours. Orville flew 120 feet
in 12 seconds and I flew 852 feet in 59 seconds. The one that is not flying
stays on the ground to write down what happens. Our flying feet are 620
feet long.
I died of Typhoid fever on May 30, age 45.
Orville was elected to the hall of fame for great Americans in 1965 and
was elected to the hall of fame 17 times after his death in 1948.
We are American inventors of airplanes with the “ WRIGHT IDEAS”
